Police Commissioner Mulvey to Receive “Friend of the Asian-American Community” Award at Asian-American Cultural Festival of LI

Mineola, NY – March 10, 2008 – Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey will be acknowledged as a “Friend of the Asian-American Community” at an awards ceremony held during the second Annual Asian-American Cultural Festival of Long Island on March 29th at the Wang Center of Stony Brook University. He will be recognized for his outreach initiatives to minority communities and for his recruitment efforts to bring more Asian-Americans into the police department.

A decorated veteran of the Nassau County Police Department with 28 years of police experience, Commissioner Mulvey was the department’s liaison to the County Executive’s office, security sight manager at the United States mission to the UN, and a security contractor to the Homeland Security Department in New York before being appointed the 12th commissioner of police in July, 2007. He is an FBI certified Hostage Negotiator and a NYS certified police instructor. He has also served as adjunct professor of criminal justice both at Molloy College and LI University.

The Asian-American Cultural festival celebrates diversity by promoting cultural awareness and appreciation, uniting representatives of various Asian countries under one roof to showcase their heritage and traditions through exhibits, performances, costumes, workshops, films, interactive shows and ceremonies. Last year’s event drew nearly a thousand people from both the Asian and non-Asian communities Admission to the afternoon program from 1-6pm is free. Children are encouraged to attend as there will be workshops and toy raffle prizes. The evening program from 7-9pm will feature the awards ceremony, a VIP Taste of Asia Cocktail Party with wine tasting by Martha Clara Vineyards, networking opportunities, live music and a Chinese auction.
